Item Description
Most dragons burn down your opponents. Hellkite Tyrant robs them. The 6/5 flier with trample takes control of every artifact a player controls whenever it deals combat damage to that player, and at the beginning of your upkeep, if you control twenty or more artifacts, you simply win the game.
In Commander that first ability is brutal. One connected hit can take an opponent's Sol Ring, Signets, Equipment and every Treasure token they have been saving, swinging the whole table's mana in your favor. The alternate win condition rewards artifact-heavy and Treasure-making decks, where twenty artifacts is far closer than it sounds, and the stolen pile counts toward the total. Trample makes the hit harder to stop with a single chump blocker, and the threat alone forces opponents to deal with it immediately.
Hellkite Tyrant debuted in Gatecrash and was reprinted in Commander 2021, where it found a fresh audience. This is the Commander 2021 printing, collector number 172, a mythic illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, in non-foil.
