Somewhere in the middle of every Helldivers II mission, someone calls in an orbital strike a little too close, and the whole squad learns why friendly fire is never switched off. Arrowhead Game Studios' 2024 co-op shooter casts you as one of Super Earth's eminently expendable soldiers, launched from orbit in a Hellpod to spread Managed Democracy across the galaxy, whether the bugs and robots out there want it or not.
The signature mechanic is the stratagem system. Instead of pressing a single button for support, you punch a directional code into the controller while enemies close in, then throw a beacon to summon an Eagle airstrike, an orbital barrage, a supply drop, a sentry turret or a heavy support weapon. Fumbling the input under pressure is part of the comedy, and so is the discovery that a falling supply pod will flatten any teammate standing under it.
Missions drop squads of up to four onto hostile planets with objectives to complete and an extraction to survive, and the two original enemy factions demand very different tactics. The insectoid Terminids swarm in overwhelming numbers, while the robotic Automatons fight from range with armor, heavy weapons and dropships. The game was built around a persistent Galactic War in which the whole community's results decided which planets were liberated or lost, with Major Orders steering the campaign. Difficulty climbs a long ladder of tiers, and the samples and medals you haul back feed ship module upgrades and Warbonds packed with new weapons, armor and stratagems.
It became a phenomenon almost overnight and was reported as the fastest-selling PlayStation game ever, thanks to a blend of tactical shooting, slapstick chaos and propaganda-reel satire with an obvious debt to Starship Troopers. It also marked a big leap for Arrowhead, whose 2015 original was a top-down twin-stick shooter; the sequel brought the action down to a third-person camera without losing an ounce of its chaos, and it is the game that defined couch-to-orbit co-op on PS5.
