Item Description
Some Equipment hits hard; Heirloom Blade hits hard and then refuses to let the story end. For three mana it hands a creature +3/+1, and when that creature dies, the blade goes looking for an heir: you reveal cards from the top of your library until you find a creature that shares a creature type with the fallen one, put it into your hand and tuck the rest on the bottom in a random order. The sword passes down the family line, exactly as the name promises.
That turns every trade into a replacement, which is why the card shows up in creature-type Commander decks. Elves, Goblins, Zombies, Humans, Dragons: when the whole deck shares a type, each chump attack or forced block digs you straight to another threat, and an equip cost of just one means re-arming the next in line barely dents your turn. Changelings, which carry every creature type, make the search even more forgiving.
This is the Secret Lair Drop printing from the cat-themed Purrfection drop, collector number 372, a borderless card illustrated by Ayako Ishiguro, offered here in non-foil. It is a charming fit for a Cat deck, where the blade can pass from one feline to the next.
