Item Description

How far would you go to save someone you love? Heavy Rain asks that question again and again, and makes you answer it with your hands. Ethan Mars has already lost one son; when his younger boy, Shaun, disappears during a week of relentless rain, the evidence points to the Origami Killer, who drowns his victims in rainwater and leaves an origami figure and an orchid behind. Ethan is offered a series of trials to prove what he would sacrifice, and each one is harder to watch than the last.

Ethan is only one of four playable characters. Madison Paige is a journalist plagued by insomnia; Norman Jayden is an FBI profiler whose ARI augmented-reality glasses turn crime scenes into floating data, at a cost to his health; and Scott Shelby is a private investigator quietly interviewing the victims' families. Their paths cross and collide, and any of them can die along the way. The story simply carries on without them, which gives every scene a weight few games manage.

Quantic Dream built the controls around that tension. Instead of a single button for every action, movements map to gestures: easing the right stick to open a door, shaking the Sixaxis to shove free of an attacker, holding down a cluster of buttons as a grip slips. Fumbled prompts do not end the game; they reshape the story, and chapters can play out very differently on a second run. Normand Corbeil's score, built on mournful piano and strings, gives the grey, rain-soaked city its melancholy.

Directed by David Cage, Heavy Rain was a landmark PlayStation 3 exclusive and a key moment in the rise of story-led, choice-driven games, the thread that runs through Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human. The many endings, and the arguments over who should have done what, keep pulling players back. Playing the PS3 original puts you right where that conversation started, with the rain still falling and Shaun still missing.
