Item Description

Somewhere inside a terrorist-held missile complex are six pieces of a weapon so powerful the whole game is named after it. Find them all, snap them together, and for a brief, glorious stretch your soldier carries the Heavy Barrel, a wide-arcing energy cannon that wipes out nearly anything in its path. Data East's 1987 arcade run-and-gun was built around that payoff, and the 1990 NES version keeps it front and center.

The setup is pure late-80s action movie. Terrorists have seized the underground control complex of a nuclear missile site, and you have to fight your way through the installation and take out their leader. It plays as an overhead run-and-gun in the mold of Ikari Warriors: your starting gun never runs dry, grenades are limited, and the corridors fill with foot soldiers and armored threats. Keys are the currency of progress. Collect them and use them on locked containers, which may hold a stronger weapon, a grenade upgrade or, if you're lucky, another precious piece of the Heavy Barrel. Deciding where to spend each key gives every run a small tactical rhythm of its own.

Two players can fight side by side, and that is where the game really comes alive: one player covering a doorway while the other sprints for a key, quick negotiations over who takes the next weapon, and the scramble over who claims the superweapon once the final piece turns up. The arcade original was played with rotary joysticks like SNK's Ikari Warriors cabinets, and the NES version brings that eight-direction mayhem to the living room.

Data East's NES library rarely gets the spotlight next to Capcom and Konami, and Heavy Barrel makes a strong case for it, with a memorable hook and real couch co-op appeal. If you love Ikari Warriors, Guerrilla War or Commando, this is the overhead shooter to line up beside them.

About the game

Heavy Barrel is a top-down run-and-gun shooter developed by Data East for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Terrorists have seized an underground control complex at a nuclear missile site, and the player must fight through the enemy installation and eliminate its leader. Weapons, grenades, and other power-ups can be found throughout the facility, while keys are used to open locked containers. The ultimate goal is to locate the six pieces of the powerful Heavy Barrel weapon, reassemble it, and use it to defeat the enemy forces. The NES version supports one- or two-player cooperative play.
