Item Description

Nariko was never supposed to exist. Her clan waited generations for a prophesied warrior, a man born to wield the Heavenly Sword, and when a red-haired girl arrived instead they saw her as a curse. Heavenly Sword begins as the tyrant King Bohan's army closes in to seize the blade, and Nariko makes the choice her clan never wanted: she takes up the sword herself, knowing it will drain her life with every swing.

Ninja Theory designed the combat around three stances you switch between with the shoulder buttons. Speed stance splits the sword into twin blades for fast combos, Range stance stretches it into chained blades that sweep through crowds, and Power stance fuses it into a massive two-handed weapon for blocking and smashing heavy enemies. Counters, Superstyle moves and cinematic finishers keep battles flowing, and the game happily throws whole armies at you. Kai, Nariko's playful and unsettling companion, brings a crossbow and the Aftertouch system, in which you steer arrows in flight by tilting the Sixaxis controller.

The performances are what people remember. Andy Serkis plays King Bohan and served as the game's dramatic director, and the performance capture gives Bohan, Kai and Nariko a theatrical expressiveness that was rare in 2007. Bohan's generals, among them Flying Fox and Whiptail, make for memorable boss fights, and Nitin Sawhney's sweeping score gives the whole adventure the feel of an epic film.

It is a short game, and reviewers said so at the time, but it is focused and dramatic from start to finish, moving from intimate family tragedy to battlefield spectacle in a handful of hours, which makes it an easy game to revisit over a weekend. As an early PlayStation 3 exclusive it showcased the cinematic storytelling Ninja Theory would carry into Enslaved and Hellblade, and playing it on PS3 shows where the studio found its voice.
