Item Description
Havengul Lich treats every graveyard at the table as its personal library. For a single generic mana, you choose a creature card in any graveyard and may cast it this turn, and when you do, the Lich gains all of that card's activated abilities until end of turn. You still pay the creature's cost, but you get the body and the Lich gets a borrowed toolbox.
In Commander, where graveyards fill quickly and opponents lose their best creatures to removal, the Lich lets you pick through the leftovers. Recast an opponent's fallen utility creature and use its abilities twice in one turn, once on the Lich and once on the creature itself after it can act. Grixis and Dimir graveyard decks, and self-mill builds that keep their own yard stocked, will find fresh targets every game.
First printed in Dark Ascension, the Lich returned in Commander 2017, the printing offered here: collector number 173, illustrated by James Ryman, in non-foil. The flavor text sets the mood: “Fusing intelligence with the power of undeath requires inspiration of the darkest kind.” At 4/4 for five mana, it's no pushover in combat either.
