Plenty of farming-game devotees trace the habit straight back to Mineral Town. Harvest Moon: Back to Nature introduced that sleepy valley community on the original PlayStation, and its companion release, Harvest Moon for Girl, came out in Japan but never made it to English-speaking players at the time. Harvest Moon: Boy & Girl finally puts the two on one PSP disc. Choose the boy or the girl at the start, and the same farm, the same neighbors and the same turning seasons play out from a different side of the story.

The rhythm is what hooks you. Each day starts on a neglected plot of land with a limited number of hours and only so much energy to spend, and the choices are small but endless: water the turnips, brush the cows, collect eggs, fish off the shore, or head into the mine for ore the blacksmith can turn into better tools. Crops change with the seasons, festivals mark the calendar, and the Harvest Sprites can be persuaded to help with the chores once you have earned their friendship. It is a game about routine, and the quiet satisfaction of watching a weedy field turn into a working farm over a few in-game years.

The long game is the town itself. Mineral Town's residents keep their own schedules, and friendship grows slowly through daily conversation and well-chosen gifts. Playing as the boy, you can court Mary, Ann, Elli, Karen or Popuri; the girl's story opens up romances with Gray, Cliff, Kai, Rick and the town doctor. Win someone's heart and marriage and a child can follow, which gives the slow work of building up the farm a very personal payoff. Mineral Town and much of this cast were later reimagined for Game Boy Advance in Friends of Mineral Town.

This PSP edition is a faithful port rather than a modern remake, so the PlayStation-era presentation and pacing come along intact, with the option to play in the original 4:3 or in the PSP's widescreen 16:9. That faithfulness is the appeal. Back to Nature's warm, unhurried loop sits comfortably on a handheld, and the For Girl half is the reason this release matters to series fans, since it is the way to play that PlayStation-era story in English and see Mineral Town from both sides.
