Item Description

Most farming games freeze time and let you tend the same fields forever. Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life lets the years run, and that one decision makes it one of the most moving entries the series ever produced. You arrive in Forget-Me-Not Valley to take over an abandoned farm, and the game follows your farmer through the chapters of an entire life, from young adulthood through marriage and parenthood to old age.

Takakura, an old friend of your father's, gets you started with a house, seeds and a cow, and shows you the basics before introducing the valley's residents. From there the rhythm is classic Harvest Moon: planting and harvesting, caring for livestock, earning money and getting to know your neighbors, who follow their own routines and change as the years pass. The difference is that the story pushes forward. You must find a wife, Celia, Muffy or Nami, by the end of the first chapter, and soon after you have a son who grows up across the following chapters. How you raise him and what you do on the farm shape the path he chooses, so two playthroughs can end with very different young men.

That arc gives the game a gentle, reflective weight that few life sims have tried. By the final chapter your son is grown and your farmer's story is drawing to a close, and the ending lands harder because you have lived through every year to reach it. The GameCube version can also link with the Game Boy Advance's Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town.

Developed by Marvelous Interactive and published by Natsume, A Wonderful Life earned warm reviews and a devoted following among GameCube farmers. It was later revisited on PlayStation 2 and remade in 2023 as Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, but this GameCube release is where it all began, and still the way to play it as it first appeared.
