Portrait-lined corridors, a castle full of secrets and a first year that ends in a race to protect the Sorcerer's Stone: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone puts Harry's first term at Hogwarts into a Game Boy Advance cartridge. Developed by Griptonite Games and published by EA in November 2001, it landed the same month the first film opened in theaters, right at the height of the original Potter craze.

This version is an action-adventure built around exploring Hogwarts. Harry works through maze-like passages, crosses chasms, triggers switches and activates platforms, learning new spells as the school year goes on. Flipendo knocks back troublesome gnomes, and other spells light up dark passages and bring magical platforms to life. Chocolate Frogs and Pumpkin Pasties are tucked away to collect, and the Quidditch matches switch to a top-down flying view with Harry as Seeker, chasing the Golden Snitch and threading hoops until he can make the grab.

Reviews at the time were mixed, and its charms are those of a 2001 licensed handheld game rather than a genre landmark. What it offers is a time capsule: each platform received its own take on the story, and the Game Boy Advance version is a distinct action game rather than a shrunken copy of the console releases. For anyone collecting the wizarding world's video game history, or revisiting the year Potter mania hit games, it's the first chapter of Harry's Game Boy Advance run.
