Item Description
One green mana, one line of rules text, and a whole archetype built around it. Whenever one or more +1/+1 counters would be put on a creature you control, Hardened Scales adds one more. That sounds modest until you see what it does to cards that care about counters: a Walking Ballista cast for X=1 arrives with two, every activation of Hangarback Walker grows it by two, and any effect that drops counters across your whole team quietly hands out an extra one per creature.
Its inclusion in a Commander 2016 preconstructed deck says a lot about where the card lives today. In Commander, +1/+1 counters are one of the most popular themes, and Hardened Scales is the cheapest way to make every counter effect in the deck better at once. Cast it on the first turn and it quietly upgrades everything that follows, from creatures that enter with counters to effects that spread them across the team.
This is the Commander 2016 printing, collector number 152, a rare featuring Mark Winters' original artwork. This printing was issued only in non-foil.
