Item Description
Kaladesh was a plane of inventors, and the Kaladesh Inventions series gave its finest artifacts the full showpiece treatment: ornate filigree frames, new artwork and foil finishes. Hangarback Walker was a natural pick, a construct whose whole purpose is to keep building Thopters.
Hangarback Walker is a lesson in flexible design. Its cost is X twice, so it can be a two-mana 1/1 on the second turn or a much larger threat later, and it enters with X +1/+1 counters. For one mana and a tap it adds another counter, and when it finally dies it leaves behind a 1/1 flying Thopter for every counter it carried. Removal never really answers it; it just changes the shape of your board. Its resilience gives it homes in artifact decks, +1/+1 counter decks and sacrifice strategies alike. Hardened Scales turns every activation into two counters, sacrifice outlets cash it in for a flock of Thopters on your terms, and artifact synergies count both the Walker and its tokens.
This is the Kaladesh Inventions printing, collector number 13, illustrated by Adam Paquette and available only in foil. It is a striking way to sleeve up a card that tends to stay in a deck for years.
