Item Description

Early in Halo 2, the story steps away from Master Chief entirely. A disgraced Covenant commander, blamed for the destruction of the first Halo ring, is branded a heretic and given a new title, the Arbiter, and then Bungie hands you his armor. Splitting the campaign between humanity's supersoldier and the enemy's most dangerous warrior turned a straightforward sequel into a stranger, bolder story about an alien empire beginning to tear itself apart from within.

The Chief's half opens with the Covenant reaching Earth, from the defense of Cairo Station to street fighting across New Mombasa, before the chase leads to a second ring, Delta Halo. The Arbiter's missions take you deep into the Covenant's own world and on to the holy city of High Charity, while the Brutes and their chieftain Tartarus emerge as a threat in their own right. Bungie rebuilt the sandbox around new tricks: dual-wielding an SMG alongside a plasma rifle, leaping onto an enemy vehicle to hijack it, and finally swinging the Elites' energy sword yourself. The battle rifle made its debut here and quickly became the weapon a generation of players reached for first, and the whole campaign can be played in two-player co-op on one screen.

Then there is the multiplayer, the reason Halo 2 became the best-selling game on the original Xbox. It brought automated matchmaking, parties and ranked playlists to Xbox Live on a scale console players had never seen, and maps like Lockout, Midship, Zanzibar, Ascension and Coagulation, a reworked take on Blood Gulch, became shared territory for millions. Those original Xbox Live servers went dark in 2010, but the same maps come alive just as well in four-player split-screen or across linked consoles at a LAN night, which is where plenty of players first fell for them anyway.

Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori's score brings back the series' chanting choir and adds a harder, guitar-driven edge, and the abrupt cliffhanger ending, still argued over by fans, set the stage for Halo 3. The original Xbox release is the game exactly as it arrived at those packed midnight launches in November 2004, years before the Anniversary remaster repainted it: the original textures, the original cutscenes and the multiplayer maps as Bungie first built them.

About the game

Halo 2 is a first-person shooter developed by Bungie and the sequel to Halo: Combat Evolved. The campaign alternates between two playable characters: the human supersoldier Master Chief and the Covenant warrior known as the Arbiter.
