Michael Myers stalking through a 16-bit side-scroller as the player character is exactly the kind of gleeful, slightly wrong idea the RetroRealms series was built on. This Double Feature pairs two horror campaigns from WayForward and Boss Team Games: one drawn from John Carpenter's original 1978 Halloween, the other from the STARZ series Ash vs Evil Dead with Ash Williams leading the charge.

Both games play like a lost console-era horror action game, the kind one reviewer described as a cross between Splatterhouse and Ninja Gaiden, with attacks you can aim in any direction, a pogo-style jump and around twenty stages per campaign packed with references to the film and the show. At any moment you can slip into the Dark Realm, a nightmare version of the stage with tougher, respawning enemies, but a draining Nightmare Meter limits how long you can linger there. Permanent upgrades come cheaply enough that the game never asks you to grind.

The two campaigns are designed to connect. They share the RetroRealms Arcade hub, where tokens collected in the stages buy souvenirs and behind-the-scenes development videos, and owning both lets you take characters from one game into the other, so Michael can wander through Ash's nightmare and vice versa.

WayForward's pixel art is stuffed with easter eggs for horror diehards, right down to a kid wearing a Silver Shamrock mask straight out of Halloween III, and Retronauts went as far as calling it one of the best throwback games its reviewer had ever played. A physical release that puts a slasher legend and a chainsaw-ready hero side by side in one 16-bit package is a wonderfully strange crossover to own.
