Item Description

The world ends in thirty seconds, and that is just the opening scene. Half-Minute Hero takes the full arc of an 8-bit role-playing quest, from leaving the first village to toppling the villain who is about to wipe out everything, and squeezes it into a frantic half minute. Developed by Opus and released on the PSP in 2009, it is a sharp, affectionate parody of the genre that also happens to work as a terrific game in its own right, and critics were quick to embrace it.

Hero 30, the main campaign, runs through thirty successive missions. You sprint across the map while random battles resolve automatically based on your level and equipment, racing to grow strong enough to beat the boss before the timer hits zero. The Time Goddess is your lifeline. In towns she freezes the clock so you can shop and recruit allies, and paying at one of her statues resets the countdown to thirty seconds. Each reset costs more than the last, which turns every run into a tense little budget puzzle: spend the gold on a better sword, or buy yourself another half minute to use it?

The real surprise is how much else is packed onto the UMD. Evil Lord 30 turns the formula into a real-time strategy game, summoning Brawlers, Shooters and Nimbles that counter each other rock-paper-scissors style while the Evil Lord races his own thirty-second limit outdoors. Princess 30 is a shoot-'em-up starring a crossbow-wielding royal and her escort, up against a strict curfew. Knight 30 makes you the bodyguard for a Sage who needs thirty uninterrupted seconds to finish a destruction spell, stunning enemies or carrying him out of harm's way. Two more variations, Hero 300 and the absurd three-second Hero 3, push the joke even further.

The soundtrack is a treat of its own. Toshihiko Takamizawa is the credited composer, and the game also features contributions from a who's who of Japanese game music, including Yuzo Koshiro, Motoi Sakuraba, Yoshino Aoki and Norihiko Hibino, all writing themes built for speed. Half-Minute Hero was later reworked for Xbox 360 and PC as Super Mega Neo Climax, but those versions condensed Evil Lord, Princess and Knight 30 into single-level modes that play like Hero 30. The PSP original is the release that keeps all four as full multi-mission campaigns, exactly as Opus designed them.
