Item Description

In the Hakuoki visual novels, players watch the Shinsengumi fight from Chizuru's point of view. Hakuoki: Warriors of the Shinsengumi hands you the sword. This PSP spin-off from Otomate and Aksys Games turns the otome series into a hack-and-slash action game in the mold of Dynasty Warriors, sending the captains of the Shinsengumi into battles across Bakumatsu-era Kyoto against hordes of enemies.

Six of the series' main characters are playable, among them Hijikata and Saito, each with their own weapon style and special attacks for clearing out crowds. When a character's life runs out they can enter Fury Mode, a berserk state that keeps them fighting at a cost, and leaning on it too often can steer the story toward a particularly grim ending.

Two modes cover different moods. Shinsengumi Memorial replays battles drawn from Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom, retracing the original story through Kyoto's streets, while Shinsengumi Chronicle is an alternate-history campaign that lets you change the Shinsengumi's fate with any of the six warriors. Two more characters can be unlocked for free play.

Reviewers found the combat repetitive, and it is not the place to start if you want a deep action game. Its real draw is getting to play as the cast Hakuoki fans have already followed through romance and tragedy, with the series' striking character designs and voice work carried into a new kind of game. For players who love these characters, it is a rare chance to see the Shinsengumi in action from the front line.

About the game

After 260 years of samurai rule, the shogunate's hold on the country began to weaken as men ostensibly loyal to the emperor began to sow chaos and dissent throughout the nation. The Shinsengumi was formed to combat this rising tide of violence, and to protect the shogun and the people from dangerous ronin. As the country inches close to all-out war, Chizuru travels to Kyoto to find her missing father. She encounters both danger and the Shinsengumi, in quick succession. After learning that the Shinsengumi are also looking for her father, Chizuru goes under their protection. However, they soon find themselves in the midst of political intrigue, supernatural power struggles, and much more as they search desperately for the answer they need.
