Item Description
Dying is how you make progress in Hades, and Supergiant Games turned that into one of the smartest ideas in modern action games. Zagreus, the rebellious prince of the Underworld, is trying to fight his way out of his father's house and up to the surface, and every time he falls he climbs back out of the Pool of Styx in the House of Hades, where the story moves forward. Characters remember what killed you, needle you about your last attempt and slowly reveal why Zagreus is so desperate to leave.
Each escape carries him through the shifting chambers of Tartarus, the lava-ringed meadows of Asphodel and the golden fields of Elysium, past bosses like the Fury sisters, the Bone Hydra and the champion duo of Theseus and Asterius. The Olympians lend help from above in the form of Boons: Zeus adds chain lightning, Poseidon sends enemies crashing into walls, Athena deflects incoming shots, and pairing two gods unlocks Duo Boons that make every run feel different. Six Infernal Arms, from the sword Stygius and the bow Coronacht to the shield Aegis and the Twin Fists, each hide alternate Aspects to discover.
Between runs, the Mirror of Night grants permanent upgrades, the House Contractor lets you renovate the halls, and gifts of Nectar deepen relationships with a cast that includes the brooding Thanatos, the fierce Megaera, the mentor Achilles and the night goddess Nyx. Darren Korb's driving, guitar-heavy score, Jen Zee's striking character art and Logan Cunningham's imperious voice for Hades himself tie it all together.
Hades became the first video game to win a Hugo Award, along with Best Game at the BAFTA Games Awards and Game of the Year at the Game Developers Choice Awards, and it set the bar other roguelikes are measured against. Once the main story wraps, the Pact of Punishment lets you crank up the difficulty run by run, so this is a PS5 disc that can stay in rotation for a very long time.
