By its third volume, the .hack saga stops easing you in. Outbreak opens with Kite racing between the servers of The World, meeting key figures and answering a flood of emails about the virus, and from there it packs in more story than either of the first two volumes. The mythology deepens around the Epitaph of Twilight, the epic poem that inspired The World's creator, and the mystery of Aura and the forces working against her comes sharply into focus.
Kite's toolkit is familiar: real-time combat with party commands, Chaos Gate keywords and the Twilight Bracelet's Data Drain. The places you use it are more dangerous. A new server brings the toughest enemies the series had thrown at Kite so far, and the dungeons themselves are more fun to explore than in earlier volumes. Two new characters join along the way, one central to the plot and one optional companion whose side quests unlock their own CG scenes, and those cinematic sequences carry some of the strongest music in the series.
Outbreak works best as part of the full run. Save data carries over from Mutation, and the story assumes you know the cast: BlackRose, Balmung, the hacker Helba and the administrators of CC Corp all figure into a crisis that is pushing beyond the game and into the wider network. Expect roughly twenty hours, which in a four-volume saga makes this a substantial chapter rather than a stopgap.
The ending lands a significant conclusion while handing the final act to Quarantine. If you have followed Kite through Infection and Mutation, this is the volume where the investigation finally starts paying off, and on original PS2 hardware it captures the full flavor of an era when a console game could convincingly pretend to be the internet.
.Hack//Outbreak is the third of a series of four games, titled .hack//Infection, .hack//Mutation, .hack//Outbreak, and .hack//Quarantine, features a "game within a game"; a fictional massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) called The World which does not require the player to connect to the Internet. Players may transfer their characters and data between games in the series. Each game comes with an extra DVD containing an episode of .hack//Liminality, the accompanying original video animation series which details fictional events that occur concurrently with the games. The games are part of a multimedia franchise called Project .hack which explores the mysterious origins of The World. Set after the events of the anime series .hack//Sign, the games focus on a player named Kite and his quest to discover why some users have become comatose as a result of playing The World. The search evolves into a deeper investigation of The World and its effects on the stability of the Internet.
