Item Description
Treasure introduced itself to the world with Gunstar Heroes, and what an introduction it was. Founded by former Konami developers, the studio made its debut in 1993 with a run-and-gun so packed with ideas that the Genesis seems to be daring you to keep up: screen-filling bosses built from many moving parts, a weapon system you assemble yourself, and a pace that rarely pauses for breath.
Gunstar Red and Gunstar Blue each carry two weapon slots, and the four basic shots, Force, Lightning, Chaser and Fire, can be paired up into a whole arsenal of hybrid weapons, so experimenting with combinations is half the fun. Before you start, you choose between free shot, which lets you run and gun at the same time, and fixed shot, which plants your feet for precise aiming. Up close the heroes are just as dangerous, with slides, jump kicks and throws that let you grab enemies and fling them across the screen.
The story is pure Saturday-morning chaos. The dictator Colonel Red has kidnapped and brainwashed the twins' older brother, Gunstar Green, to hunt down four mystical gems that can awaken the destroyer Golden Silver. What follows is a parade of set pieces players still talk about: Seven Force, a single boss that keeps transforming into new shapes, and the Dice Palace, a board-game stage where each roll of the die drops you into a different encounter.
Two players can share the mayhem in simultaneous co-op, and the game has been reissued many times since, but the Genesis cartridge is where Treasure's run began, the start of a body of work that went on to include Alien Soldier, Guardian Heroes and Sin and Punishment. Its combination of invention, speed and sheer spectacle is why Treasure became a name action fans say with reverence, and this is the cartridge that earned it.
