Item Description
Gungrave opens with a dead man getting his guns back. Brandon Heat was a loyal enforcer for Millennion, the syndicate that runs the city, until his closest friend, Harry MacDowell, shot him for refusing to help overthrow the organization's leader, Big Daddy. Fifteen years later Harry has seized control, the streets are flooded with a drug called SEED, and Dr. T has brought Brandon back as Beyond the Grave, a silent revenant with two massive handguns and a coffin strapped to his back. Big Daddy's daughter, Mika, is placed under his protection, and the hit list runs straight up Millennion's ranks to Harry himself.
The game is pure, unapologetic style. Stages are corridors packed with breakable scenery, and Grave tears through them with a mix of gunfire and close-range strikes, while a recharging shield keeps you pushing forward instead of hiding. Keep the hits coming and the beat counter climbs into the hundreds, building the meter that powers Grave's special attacks, as the coffin he carries, the Death Hauler, opens up to unleash machine-gun fire and rockets that level entire rooms. It plays like an action-movie shootout you direct yourself.
The look is the real draw. Characters were designed by Yasuhiro Nightow, creator of Trigun, with mechanical designs by Kosuke Fujishima of Oh My Goddess! fame, and Tsuneo Imahori, who scored the Trigun anime, handles the music. Red Entertainment developed it, and Sega published it in North America in 2002. Critics were split, with many finding the action shallow and the campaign brief, but Grave himself won near-universal praise as one of the coolest-looking antiheroes of the PS2's early years.
That style was strong enough to outlive the reviews. Gungrave grew into a 26-episode anime that fleshed out Brandon and Harry's history, the sequel Gungrave: Overdose, and eventually a modern revival with Gungrave G.O.R.E in 2022. This is where it all started: a short, loud, gorgeous slice of early PS2 action that plays best in a single sitting with the volume turned up.
