It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Guitar Hero spent three games perfecting one plastic instrument. World Tour is where it finally handed the rest of the band a part. Neversoft's 2008 entry, the fourth main game in the series, added drums and vocals to lead and bass guitar, so four people can share one screen, each with their own note highway, and play a song together from count-in to final chord.
The setlist is built for exactly that kind of full-band night, with songs like the Eagles' "Hotel California," Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train," Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher" and Michael Jackson's "Beat It" among a long run of classic rock, metal and modern tracks. Career modes cover both solo play and a full band, the Rock Star Creator lets you build your own musician from the ground up, and real rock stars show up as playable characters, Jimi Hendrix, Ozzy Osbourne and Travis Barker among them. The drum kit the game was designed around, with raised cymbals above the pads, gave drummers a part that felt closer to a real kit than anything the series had tried before.
World Tour also introduced the Music Studio, a surprisingly deep composition tool for writing and recording your own songs inside the game, note by note and instrument by instrument. The Wii version adds its own touches, bringing players' Miis onto the stage and including a Mii Freestyle mode for jamming loosely with your Mii rather than chasing a score.
It arrived at the height of the rhythm-game boom, as Guitar Hero answered Rock Band's full-band format with its own, and it set the template that later entries would follow. On Wii it fits right in with the console's living-room crowd: hand out the instruments, pass around the microphone, and let the household find out who the real drummer is.
Guitar Hero: World Tour is the fourth main game in the series and brings a major change to the concept. Following the release of Rock Band that built on the Guitar Hero concept but added additional instruments, World Tour introduces these as well to allow players to play together simultaneously as a real band. Next to the guitar that was the main peripheral for the previous titles, the bundled edition of the game adds a microphone for the vocal parts and drums for percussion. Just like the previous game, the guitar tracks are split up for the lead and bass. The lyrics and the vocal pitch is shown near the top of the screen, while the bottom part is split up for bass guitar, lead guitar and drums, each with a separate set of notes that need to be hit to correctly play the part.
