The smartest idea in Guitar Hero 5 is waiting before you ever reach a menu. Boot the game and Party Play is already running, cycling through random songs from the setlist while anyone in the room can grab a guitar, a drum kit or a microphone, pick a difficulty and join mid-song. Someone heads to the kitchen, someone else takes over, and the music never stops. For a series built on living-room parties, it was the moment Guitar Hero stopped making the party wait on menus.
Neversoft's follow-up to World Tour keeps the four-piece band of lead guitar, bass, drums and vocals but throws out the rule that a band needs one of each. Four guitarists, two drummers and a singer, any combination works, and every player sets their own difficulty. Star Power is tracked per player, while Band Moments reward everyone for nailing a highlighted section together, which makes a full group feel like an actual band. Each song also carries its own Challenge, graded at Gold, Platinum and Diamond, that unlocks new avatars and outfits; the one attached to David Bowie's "Fame" is built around the vocals.
The setlist runs to 85 songs from 83 artists and swings wide on purpose, from Queen and David Bowie's "Under Pressure" to a live 1992 recording of Nirvana's "Lithium", with plenty of alternative, metal and pop in between. Critics at the time praised the streamlined menus and Party Play while grumbling that the list was uneven, a fair trade for a game meant to keep a mixed crowd happy. Kurt Cobain, Johnny Cash, Carlos Santana, Shirley Manson and Matt Bellamy all appear as playable characters, and the Xbox 360 version let you bring your own Xbox Live Avatar onto the stage.
Competitive groups get RockFest, which stacks several scoring rule sets, among them Momentum, Streakers, Perfectionist and Elimination, into a single head-to-head session. Like every band-era Guitar Hero, it was designed around plastic instruments rather than a standard controller. What sets this entry apart is how little it asks of the people holding them: no lobby to configure, no matching lineup to assemble, just the next song and an open spot on stage.
Guitar Hero 5 (initially referred to as Guitar Hero V) is a music rhythm game and the fifth main entry in the Guitar Hero series. The game was developed by Neversoft and published by Activision, and released internationally in September 2009 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, 3 and Wii consoles. Similar to the preceding title, Guitar Hero World Tour, Guitar Hero 5 is geared towards playing in a four-person band experience, including lead and bass guitar, drums, and vocals. The game is available as a standalone title, allowing players to use existing compatible instrument controllers, and as a bundle that provides these controllers. Guitar Hero 5 adds several new features, such as drop-in/drop-out play, bands composed of any combination of available instruments, a Rockfest competitive mode consisting of several various scoring mechanisms, and both song-specific and general Challenges to unlock new avatars, clothing, and other extras in the game. Many of these changes were added to make the game a more social experience, allowing players across a range of skill levels to be able to play cooperatively and competitively against each other both locally and online.
