For years, the received wisdom was that 3D graphics could never match the hand-drawn spark of a great 2D fighting game. Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign- proved that wrong. Arc System Works built Sol Badguy and company as 3D models in Unreal Engine 3, then animated them like sprites, deliberately holding poses and skipping in-between frames so every punch snaps the way hand-drawn animation does. The camera can swoop in for a dramatic Overdrive or Instant Kill, yet in the thick of a match it looks like the finest anime fighter you have ever seen move.

Underneath the presentation is classic Guilty Gear: fast, aggressive and dense with options. Roman Cancels let you cut an attack short, now even on a whiff, to extend combos or reset pressure, Faultless Defense pushes attackers away, and the new Blitz Shield can repel strikes and projectiles to leave an opponent stunned. Danger Time, also new here, can trigger when attacks clash, raising damage and turning a well-timed hit into a Mortal Counter. It is a game that rewards study, and the deeper you dig, the more expressive it gets.

The roster mixes long-time favorites such as Ky Kiske, Millia Rage, May, Potemkin, Faust and Axl Low with newcomers including Ramlethal Valentine, Bedman and Sin Kiske, Ky's son. Story mode takes an unusual approach, playing out as a feature-length anime-style film rather than a string of fights, and it picks up after the events of Guilty Gear 2: Overture. Series creator Daisuke Ishiwatari's heavy metal soundtrack keeps every match running at full volume.

Sign was the series' first all-new fighting game in more than a decade, after years of Guilty Gear XX revisions, and its 2D-in-3D technique became the foundation for Revelator, Guilty Gear Strive and Dragon Ball FighterZ. That makes it a fascinating piece of fighting-game history, and it is still a thrill to play head-to-head with a friend on the couch.
