Item Description
“Avacyn emerged from the broken Helvault, but her freedom came at a price—him.” Thalia's flavor text tells the story of Avacyn Restored in one line: when the Helvault cracked open to release Innistrad's guardian angel, Griselbrand came out with her.
The demon earned its reputation fast. Griselbrand is an eight-mana 7/7 with flying and lifelink, and for no mana at all it lets you pay 7 life to draw seven cards, as many times as your life total allows. Eight mana is a lot to pay the fair way, which is exactly why players spent years finding unfair ways around it: reanimating it from the graveyard on the second turn, or slipping it into play with effects that put creatures onto the battlefield for free. Once it lands, a single activation refills your hand and a single attack gains the life back.
In Commander and casual games it is the payoff for every ramp spell and reanimation trick in your deck. Modern Masters 2017 gave it a wider printing for players who missed the original. This is the Modern Masters 2017 printing, collector number 72, illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, in non-foil.
