Item Description

There are no words in Gris, and it never needs any. Nomada Studio's debut opens with a young woman waking in the hand of a crumbling statue, her voice gone and her world drained to grey. As she presses on, color returns one hue at a time, and each new shade reshapes the landscape around her, from wind-scoured red deserts to green forests and flooded blue depths.

The play is gentle platforming and environmental puzzle-solving with no combat and no game-over screens. Her flowing dress is the key to her growing abilities: it can harden into a heavy block that stands firm against roaring gales and smashes through fragile floors, and later it carries her through the water with the grace of a fish. She gains a double jump, and when she finally finds her voice again, singing to wake the world around her becomes part of the puzzle design.

The look comes from Spanish artist Conrad Roset, whose watercolor illustrations seem to bleed and bloom across the screen, while the score by Barcelona band Berlinist swells and recedes with every chapter. Published by Devolver Digital, it drew wide acclaim for its art direction and emotional depth and became a touchstone for games that tell their stories through image and music alone.

Gris takes a few hours to finish and is best felt in one or two sittings: a quiet, cathartic journey through grief told entirely in color, motion and sound. On a big screen it looks like a painting coming to life, and the moment the last color floods back into its world is a payoff the whole game has been patiently building toward.
