Item Description
Every creature that dies on your side of the table could be a card in hand, and Grim Backwoods makes that trade from the land slot. It taps for colorless mana like any utility land, but for two generic mana plus one black and one green, you can tap it and sacrifice a creature to draw a card. Sitting among your lands, it costs you no spell slot and rarely draws removal.
That makes it a natural fit for Golgari sacrifice decks in Commander. Chump-block with a token, then cash the token in for a card. Respond to removal by sacrificing the targeted creature before it resolves. Feed it creatures with death triggers or ones that keep returning from the graveyard, and the land becomes a steady engine that keeps your hand full through long games.
First printed in Innistrad, the haunted-woods land returns here in a Secret Lair version. This is the Secret Lair Drop printing, collector number 354, illustrated by N.C. Winters, in foil.
