Item Description
Grief rips the best card out of an opponent's hand, and it can do it for free on the first turn. One of the five Evoke Incarnations from Modern Horizons 2 (2021), it is a four-mana 3/2 Elemental Incarnation with menace that makes an opponent reveal their hand and discard the nonland card of your choice when it enters. Evoke it instead by exiling a black card from your hand, and you get the same discard for zero mana, sacrificing Grief when it arrives.
That free disruption quickly found a home in black decks in Magic's older formats, where taking away a key spell before the opponent can cast it can decide the game. Players soon discovered the “Scam” trick too: return Grief to the battlefield in response to its evoke sacrifice and you get a second discard trigger plus a 3/2 menace body that stays. In Commander, it is a flexible piece of hand disruption that doubles as a real threat when you have the mana to cast it.
This is the Modern Horizons 2 borderless printing, collector number 311, illustrated by Svetlin Velinov, in foil, with the art running edge to edge across the mythic.
