You are Driver 22, the new second seat at Seneca Racing, a struggling team with more grit than budget, and the Grid World Series is firmly in the grip of Ravenwest, the powerhouse run by Nathan and Ryan McKane. Grid Legends, Codemasters’ 2022 entry in the racing series it launched with Race Driver: Grid in 2008, wraps that underdog story in Driven to Glory, a documentary-style story mode filmed with virtual production techniques and played straight as a motorsport drama.
The cast gives it real personality, led by Ncuti Gatwa, shortly before he stepped into the TARDIS in Doctor Who, as Valentin Manzi, the cocky lead driver for rival team Voltz Racing. Between the interviews and paddock drama, the racing itself does the talking, and the career that sits alongside the story offers hundreds of events to work through.
Variety is the game’s calling card. More than 100 cars at launch range from open-wheel single-seaters to supercars, and multi-class races put faster and slower machines on the same track at once, so you are carving through traffic and defending from cars in a different class, including a field racing past Buckingham Palace in London. Drift and Elimination events return at the fictional Yokohama Docks, and the Race Creator allows more than a million combinations of car, track and rules. The hop-in feature was designed to let players drop into a friend’s or rival’s career event mid-race.
The handling sits in Grid’s familiar sweet spot between arcade and simulation: weighty and rewarding, but approachable on a standard controller, with assists and difficulty options for both pad and wheel players. On the Xbox Series X it is a racer with a story to tell, the rare driving game where you care about who finishes behind you as much as who finishes ahead.
