Item Description
Every creature you control becomes a stack of cards waiting to be cashed in. Greater Good is a four-mana green enchantment that lets you sacrifice a creature to draw cards equal to its power, then discard three. The ability costs no mana and can be used as often as you have creatures to feed it, so when an opponent points removal at your biggest threat, you can answer by turning that threat into a fresh grip of cards before the spell resolves.
The discard clause looks like a drawback until you build around it. Reanimator and graveyard decks happily pitch big creatures into the yard to bring back later, aristocrats lists gain another free sacrifice outlet, and green Commander decks can convert a ten-power monster into ten new cards. First printed back in Urza's Saga, it has kept its place wherever green players treat their creatures as a renewable resource. Jarad's flavor text sums up the Golgari attitude: “There's wisdom to be gained in death—whether it be one's own or someone else's.”
This is the Double Masters printing, collector number 170, illustrated by Mathias Kollros, in non-foil, from the 2020 reprint set built around two rares in every pack.
