For the specifics, look to the photos — they're of this exact item. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Fast breaks, double-dribble calls, slam dunks and a winning free throw with the clock running down: Great Basketball squeezes the basics of the sport into a quick, arcade-style game that is easy to pick up and surprisingly hard to put down. It is part of Sega's own in-house sports push for the Master System, and it plays with the same no-fuss confidence as the rest of the Great series.

You handle both ends of the floor, pushing the ball up for an easy bucket on offense and scrambling back to stop the other team's fast break on defense. The field is international, which gives each game a bit of a world-tournament feel, and the referee keeps everyone honest, calling violations against you and your opponent alike. Games move briskly, and the momentum swings that come from a couple of quick steals are where the fun lives.

The best way to play is with a friend on the other bench. Two players can go head-to-head, and that turns it into the kind of loud, competitive couch game the console was made for. There are no real-player licenses or season modes here, which is exactly what makes it an enjoyable snapshot of 1980s console sports, and a natural partner for Great Baseball on a Master System shelf.

About the game

This is basketball at the professional level. Full of international competition from the first jump ball to the last jump shot. Whether it's four on three or three on two - the action is fast and furious. And there are no favorites in this demanding play. You'll be called for double dribbling, cheered for every slam-dunk and carried off the court for making the winning free throw. But so will your opponent. So go for it. Your tough offense can put a "fast break" in the opposing team's stride while your defense remains solid as a rock. But think fast - because two can play at this game - and only one can win!
