Item Description
Kat's first lesson in the floating city of Hekseville is that “down” is negotiable. With a tap of a button she lets go of the ground, picks a new direction and falls toward it, so a wall becomes a floor, the underside of a bridge becomes a street and the open sky becomes a racetrack. Gravity Rush builds a whole open-world adventure around that one feeling, and more than a decade later there is still nothing quite like it.
Kat wakes with no memory, a mysterious black cat named Dusty at her side and the power to shift gravity, and she quickly finds that Hekseville needs her. Its districts are being swallowed by gravity storms and attacked by the Nevi, strange creatures with glowing weak points, and a rival gravity shifter named Raven complicates every step. Combat turns her powers into weapons: the Gravity Kick sends her rocketing feet-first into enemies, she can lift and hurl objects with a stasis field, and later abilities like the gravity slide let her surf along the ground at speed. Gems scattered across the city fund upgrades, rewarding curious explorers.
The world and story are as distinctive as the movement. Director Keiichiro Toyama, the creator of Siren and the original Silent Hill, drew on European comics, and the cutscenes play out as comic-book panels you flip through on the screen. The city has a hazy, sepia-tinged beauty, and Kohei Tanaka's orchestral score, full of waltz rhythms and big brass swells, gives every flight over the rooftops a sense of wonder.
It was made for the Vita, too, using the system's motion sensors to aim and steer and its touchscreen for evasive moves, so it feels at home in a way later ports could only approximate. Gravity Rush grew into a series, with a PS4 remaster and Gravity Rush 2, but this is where Kat's story and that unforgettable fall into the sky began.
