Item Description

Few RPG battle systems feel as alive as Grandia's. Every hero and monster rides a shared initiative gauge across the top of the screen, and timing is everything: hit an enemy with a Critical just as it winds up a spell and you can knock its turn backward or cancel the attack entirely, or choose a multi-hit Combo when raw damage matters more. Characters physically move around the battlefield, so position, speed and turn order turn every fight into a little puzzle. This collection brings both of Game Arts' classic Grandia adventures to the Switch in remastered form.

The original Grandia debuted on the Sega Saturn in 1997 and reached North America on the PlayStation in 1999. It is an adventure in the purest sense: Justin, a boy who dreams of becoming a great explorer, sets out with his young friend Sue and her flying pet Puffy, and the story builds toward one of the genre's great moments of wonder when the party scales the towering wall known as the End of the World to see what lies beyond. Along the way Justin meets Feena, a seasoned adventurer, and the tone stays bright, warm and full of discovery.

Grandia II, first released on the Dreamcast in 2000, is a sharper, darker story. Ryudo is a cynical mercenary, or Geohound, who travels with a talking hawk named Skye and takes a job escorting Elena, a songstress of the Church of Granas. The contract pulls him into a conflict over the remains of the dark god Valmar, and Elena's link to the winged, sharp-tongued Millenia gives the cast an edge the first game never attempted. Mana Eggs and Skill Books let you shape each character's magic and abilities, and the battle system is at its fastest and most cinematic here. Noriyuki Iwadare scored both games, and his music is a big part of why they linger.

Having the pair together on one portable system is a real treat if you missed them on Saturn, PlayStation or Dreamcast, or have been waiting for a convenient way to replay them. This Asian release carries English text, which gives it extra appeal for physical Switch collectors who like to track down regional editions, and the games themselves make an excellent case for why Game Arts' series still has such a devoted following among RPG players.
