Item Description
Before Tommy Vercetti ever set foot in Vice City, a soldier named Victor Vance was stationed at Fort Baxter Air Base, trying to support his family on an army paycheck. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories is his story, set in 1984, and it follows a man with a strict moral code who gets dragged into crime by a corrupt sergeant, Jerry Martinez, and his own reckless brother Lance.
Rockstar Leeds' 2006 follow-up to Liberty City Stories returns to the pastel, neon-lit city of the PS2 classic two years before Tommy's arrival. Vic crosses paths with the drug-running Mendez brothers, a younger Phil Cassidy and other faces Vice City fans will know, and one memorable mission involves none other than Phil Collins, who appears in the game performing at a concert. Vic himself is an unusual GTA lead, a reluctant criminal driven by family and loyalty rather than ambition, and fans of the original will know how his story ends, which gives this prequel a bittersweet edge.
The big new idea is empire building. Vic can seize properties across the city and turn them into criminal businesses, from protection rackets to smuggling, then defend them from rival gangs and grow them into a citywide operation. Unlike Tommy Vercetti, Vic can swim, and the jet skis and helicopters make the coastline and skyline fair game. The soundtrack leans hard into the 1980s, and the radio stations capture the era with the series' usual wit. Local ad hoc multiplayer adds head-to-head modes for friends with PSPs.
Like Liberty City Stories, it was later ported to the PlayStation 2, but the PSP is where it began. It is a bigger, more polished take on the handheld GTA formula, and the best way to see the Vance brothers' side of Vice City's crime story.
