Item Description

Three years before Grand Theft Auto III's silent hero ever crashed into town, Toni Cipriani stepped off a boat in Portland after years lying low, ready to work his way back into the Leone family. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is that story, set in 1998, and when it reached the PSP in 2005 it put a full Rockstar open world in your hands at a time when that felt close to impossible.

Toni answers to Don Salvatore Leone and, just as often, to his relentlessly disappointed Ma. His climb pulls him into wars with the Sindacco and Forelli families, double-crosses within the Leone ranks and a rigged mayoral election, with missions that swing from high-speed hits to darkly comic errands. Familiar faces from GTA III appear at earlier points in their lives, which makes the story especially fun if you know where they end up, and Toni himself is a blunt, old-school enforcer who can handle any rival family but never quite wins an argument with his mother.

The city is the Liberty City of GTA III rebuilt for the PSP, spread across Portland, Staunton Island and Shoreside Vale, and this time it has motorcycles, something the 2001 game never offered. Returning players will recognize the streets, but seeing them three years earlier, under different bosses, is a big part of the fun. The radio stations bring the series' signature satire, with talk shows and period-appropriate music, and they give the long drives between jobs a personality few portable games of the era came close to. For local play, ad hoc multiplayer for up to six players offers modes such as Liberty City Survivor.

Developed by Rockstar Leeds with Rockstar North, it became a huge PSP seller and was later ported to the PlayStation 2, a rare case of a handheld game moving up to the console. Played on the PSP it was designed for, it is a full-sized GTA chapter that fills in Liberty City's history, and the game that showed what Sony's handheld could really do.
