Item Description

Huang Lee's first night in Liberty City goes about as badly as it possibly could. Sent to deliver his murdered father's prized sword, Yu Jian, to his Uncle Kenny, he is ambushed, robbed and left for dead in a car rolled into the river. The rest of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is the story of a spoiled rich kid clawing his way through the Triads to learn who set him up and why. Rockstar built it first for the Nintendo DS, and the PSP version that followed in 2009 reworked that handheld original for Sony's hardware.

This is GTA seen from above, with a tilted, cel-shaded camera that turns Liberty City (the city Rockstar rebuilt for Grand Theft Auto IV, minus Alderney) into something like a living comic book. Story scenes play out in illustrated panels packed with sharp, profane, funny writing, and the missions move quickly: tailing, ramming, defending, escaping. The police system is one of the series' smartest twists, because shaking each wanted star means wrecking a set number of pursuing cruisers, which turns every chase into a demolition derby.

Then there is the drug trade, the side hustle that swallowed hours of players' time. Dealers all over the city buy and sell six different products at prices that swing by neighborhood, and the hunt for a cheap batch to flip across town is a full trading game hiding inside an action game. Tip-offs arrive by in-game email, prices spike without warning, and a good run can bankroll Huang's whole arsenal.

On the PSP, the DS touch-screen tasks become button and analog-nub challenges, from hotwiring cars to rummaging through dumpsters, and steering moves to analog control. The visuals get a lift too, with stronger lighting, shadows and fire effects, and Rockstar added a handful of new story missions on top of the original campaign. It is the sharper-looking way to play a top-down Grand Theft Auto that critics ranked with the best portable games of its generation, and a darkly funny crime story that holds up next to the console entries.
