Item Description

Only two Grand Theft Auto games ever landed on the Game Boy Color, and this is the stranger, later one. Released at the end of 2000, just months before Grand Theft Auto III rewrote the series in 3D, it squeezes Rockstar's near-future crime sandbox onto a handheld cartridge, back when GTA still meant a top-down view, a city carved up by rival gangs, and the freedom to climb into whatever car happened to stop at the light.

The conversion came from Tarantula Studios, the team that had already brought the original Grand Theft Auto to the Game Boy Color, and it is very much a toned-down take on the PC and PlayStation game. The overhead camera, the car-jacking and the mission-hunting structure are recognizably GTA 2, scaled to a small screen and a two-button pad. Critics in 2000 were not kind to it, and it is fair to say this is a rougher, simpler ride than its console big brother.

That is also exactly what makes it fun to own. This is a snapshot of Rockstar before the open-world revolution, a crime game shoehorned onto a system best known for Pokémon and Wario Land, and a real curiosity in the Game Boy Color library. For anyone tracing Grand Theft Auto from its overhead roots to the blockbusters that followed, it is the missing handheld link that most collections skip.

About the game

The game takes place at an undisclosed time in the near future. Unlike the first game which featured three different cities, Grand Theft Auto 2 only features a single town, but it's divided into three districts which are unlocked one at a time: downtown, residential and industrial. Like in the original, the player goes around answering phones to initiate various missions. The game uses an overhead camera in a 3D landscape and allows the player to freely explore the city and steal any vehicle the player sets his or her eyes on. To unlock new districts the player must reach a certain score which is done by committing crimes and finishing missions.
