Item Description

More than 800 cars in your pocket. That was the promise of Gran Turismo on the PSP, and when Polyphony Digital finally released its handheld edition in 2009, it kept that promise, with a garage list drawn from manufacturers around the world and 35 tracks that mix real-world circuits with Gran Turismo favorites.

This is Gran Turismo stripped down to its purest loop. You start with an empty garage, and instead of a structured career ladder the game lets you pick races, set the difficulty and earn money however you like. The dealerships' stock changes as you race, so the car you want might not be on the lot today, and that turns car hunting into a small game of its own. Driving Challenges teach braking points and cornering lines and offer a steady source of early credits.

Under the hood it is still a Polyphony game. A set of tuning options lets you fine-tune a car's setup, and you can choose Standard or Professional handling, the latter rewarding a delicate touch on the D-pad or the analog nub. Most tracks can be run in reverse, which stretches the layouts further. Multiplayer was built around local wireless races between PSPs, and players can trade and share cars with one another.

Critics missed a full career mode, but that was never the point here. Gran Turismo on the PSP is built for quick sessions: a handful of laps against the AI or a quick spin in a newly bought car, then back to tuning your next purchase. For series fans, it is the one time Polyphony made a dedicated portable Gran Turismo, and it captures the car-collecting obsession that made the series famous.
