Item Description
Most reanimation spells ask you to keep the creature. Goryo's Vengeance only needs it for a single turn, and it charges just two mana at instant speed for the privilege. Target a legendary creature card in your graveyard, return it to the battlefield with haste, and exile it at the beginning of the next end step. Put a giant legend into the graveyard early, and Goryo's turns that setup into an attack, a massive enters trigger, or a pile of activated abilities before anyone can react.
The timing is where the card gets clever. Cast it at the end of an opponent's turn and the next end step belongs to you, so the returned legend stays for your entire turn. Commander players can sacrifice or blink the creature before the exile trigger to keep the value. It is an Arcane instant with splice onto Arcane for {2}{B}, too, so in a deck with other Arcane spells you can reveal it and tack its effect onto them while keeping Goryo's in hand.
This is the Ultimate Masters printing, collector number 99, illustrated by Randy Vargas, in non-foil. Ultimate Masters leaned hard into graveyard strategies, and Vargas's version brought this Kamigawa-era combo piece back into circulation for a new generation of reanimator players.
