Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Hold the magic button and watch the power build. That small change sits at the center of Golden Axe II, Sega's follow-up to its fantasy brawler, made for the Genesis rather than ported from an arcade cabinet. In the original, casting magic emptied your whole stock at once; here the little thieves have become tiny wizards who drop spell books, and how long you hold the button decides how much power you spend and which level of spell you unleash. Save it all for a boss or spend a little to clear a crowd: the choice is finally yours.
Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead return to stop Dark Guld, a new Lord of Darkness who has seized the Golden Axe itself and set his armies loose across the land. The trio fights with the same satisfying weight as before, now with new sprites and a slightly quicker feel, and the beast-riding that made the first game so memorable is back, so knocking a rider off his mount and turning it on his friends is as much fun as ever. Lizardmen, headless knights and other new man-beasts join the enemy ranks on the march toward Dark Guld's hall.
Naofumi Hataya's soundtrack is catchier than the original's, with an opening-stage theme that lodges in your head, and the difficulty is gentler than the arcade game's, which makes this a friendly place to start the series. Like its predecessor it is built for two players side by side, and sharing the screen with a friend, arguing over who gets the dragon, is still the best way to play it.
Golden Axe II is the series at home on Sega's console: a Genesis original that sits between the first game and the arcade-only Revenge of Death Adder, before Golden Axe III arrived. It refines rather than reinvents, and that is its appeal. Pick your warrior, call in a co-op partner, and see how much spell power you can bank for the final fight.
The Lord of Darkness, Dark Guld, has arisen again. Wielding the famous Golden Axe, he has destroyed entire countries with his evil clan, forcing the world into chaos. Once again, three brave warriors stand up to face the oppressors, and won’t rest until the Golden Axe is returned to its rightful place.
