Item Description
A dwarf with a battle axe, a barbarian with a broadsword and an Amazon with a longsword fight their way to a village that turns out to sit on the back of a giant turtle. That's the kind of adventure Golden Axe is: a sword-and-sorcery brawler that wears its love of Conan proudly, and one of the cartridges that defined the early Genesis by bringing Sega's 1989 arcade hit home.
Death Adder has seized the King of Yuria and his daughter and claimed the Golden Axe itself, and three warriors with personal scores to settle set out to stop him. Gilius Thunderhead, from the mines of Wolud, lost his twin brother to Death Adder's soldiers; Ax Battler is avenging his mother, and Tyris Flare her parents. Each fights differently and wields a different kind of magic: Gilius calls down lightning, Ax summons the earth and Tyris unleashes fire, and each can hold a different amount of magic power, so choosing a hero changes how you play.
Magic comes from potions, and potions come from the little blue thieves who scurry through the levels and the bonus stages with sacks full of them. Kicking them until they drop their loot is one of the great small pleasures of the genre, and green thieves carry food to restore your health. Then there are the bizarrians, beasts you can claim by knocking their riders off: the tail-swiping Cockatrice and dragons that breathe fire or spit fireballs across a crowd. Skeleton warriors claw their way out of the ground like something out of Jason and the Argonauts, and a giant eagle carries you on to Death Adder's castle.
The Genesis version is more than a straight port. It stays close to the arcade but adds a whole extra level, a new ending and Death Adder's mentor, Death Bringer, as the true final boss. Duel mode pits you against waves of increasingly powerful foes or against a friend one-on-one, and a Beginner mode eases newcomers in. Two-player co-op, the soul of the arcade original, comes along intact, and this is the game that launched a franchise Sega still returns to. Pick your warrior, bring a friend and settle things with Death Adder side by side.
