Fimbulwinter has buried Midgard in snow, and the end of the world is no longer a prophecy so much as a countdown. God of War Ragnarök picks up a few years after Santa Monica Studio's 2018 reinvention of the series, with Kratos trying to keep a now-teenage Atreus safe while the boy chases answers about Loki, the giants and his own part in the coming war. Odin wants him close. Thor wants Kratos dead. What follows is a father-and-son story with world-ending stakes and a surprising amount of warmth.

Where the 2018 game kept several realms out of reach, Ragnarök opens all nine. From the dwarven waterways of Svartalfheim to the overgrown wilds of Vanaheim, each realm is layered with Favors, hidden paths and optional bosses. Brok and Sindri are back as the bickering blacksmiths, Mímir still rides on Kratos's hip with a story for every occasion, Freya returns with her grief over Baldur turned into something far more complicated, and the young giant Angrboda opens up a side of the lore the first game only hinted at.

Combat builds on the Leviathan Axe and the Blades of Chaos with a third weapon, the Draupnir Spear, which can be hurled in quick volleys and detonated. Each weapon gains elemental signature moves, shields now come in styles that change how Kratos blocks and parries, and Atreus is a far more capable partner with his bow. In several chapters he takes the lead as a playable character with his own fighting style, a change of perspective that gives the story real breathing room.

Bear McCreary's thunderous score, the performances of Christopher Judge, Sunny Suljic, Ryan Hurst as Thor and Richard Schiff as Odin, and a script that lets its characters argue, joke and grieve earned the game a run of wins at The Game Awards 2022, including Best Narrative, Best Score and Music, and Best Performance for Judge. It closes the Norse saga that began in 2018, and on PS5 the DualSense's haptics and adaptive triggers give every axe throw and recall a satisfying weight. Owning it means owning the finale to Kratos's second life.
