Some of Kratos's most important chapters were written for a handheld. Ready at Dawn's two PSP games, Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta, filled in the gaps around the original God of War, and they were so ambitious for the hardware that bringing them to the big screen felt overdue. God of War: Origins Collection puts both on a single PlayStation 3 Blu-ray, rebuilt in native 1080p at 60 frames per second with DualShock 3 rumble, trophies and stereoscopic 3D support. In Europe and Australia it was released as God of War Collection Volume II.

Chains of Olympus takes place during Kratos's ten years of service to the gods. When the sun god Helios goes missing and Morpheus smothers the world in a dark sleep, Kratos is drawn down into the Underworld, where he meets Persephone and is offered a choice involving his lost daughter, Calliope, that cuts deeper than any boss fight. It also hands him the Gauntlet of Zeus, a heavy-hitting alternative to the Blades of Chaos.

Ghost of Sparta, the later and larger of the two, turns personal. Set between the first two console games and haunted by visions of his mother and his long-lost brother Deimos, it takes Kratos to Atlantis, to Sparta itself and finally to the Domain of Death to face Thanatos. It added the Arms of Sparta, a spear-and-shield fighting style that honors his roots, and Thera's Bane, which sets his weapons ablaze, and its scale, from the fall of Atlantis to the climactic battles, rarely betrays its handheld origins.

Both games keep the series' fast combat, enormous bosses and brutal finishers, and together they give real emotional weight to the years before Kratos turned on Olympus, especially in the way Ghost of Sparta explains his anguish over his family. If the Greek saga is on your PS3 shelf, this is the volume that fills in the timeline, in the sharpest form these two games have had.
