Every God of War fan knows the red tattoo. Ghost of Sparta is the game that finally explains it. The mark honors Kratos's brother Deimos, taken as a child by Ares and Athena because of a prophecy about a marked warrior who would bring down Olympus, and this 2010 PSP chapter is the story of Kratos going to get him back.
Set between the first two God of War games, it finds Kratos newly crowned god of war but haunted by visions. They lead him to Atlantis, where his mother Callisto holds the truth about his past, and onward to the Domain of Death to tear Deimos from the god Thanatos. Along the way he walks the streets of Sparta itself, battles sea monsters like Scylla, and brings about the fall of Atlantis in one of the most spectacular sequences the PSP ever ran. It is a darker, more personal story than its predecessor, and it adds real weight to who Kratos is in every game that follows.
Ready at Dawn refined everything it learned on Chains of Olympus. The Blades of Athena carry the combos, the new Thera's Bane magic infuses attacks with fire to smash through armored enemies, and the Arms of Sparta add a spear and shield, letting Kratos block, thrust and fight like the Spartan soldier he once was. Bosses are huge, the pacing rarely lets up, and the visuals pushed the hardware further than almost anything else on the system.
Beyond the main story, the Battle Arena lets you test yourself against custom fights, and orbs earned there can be spent in the Temple of Zeus on concept art and other bonuses. Paired with Chains of Olympus, it gives the PSP its own two-game God of War saga, and this is the bigger, bolder and more personal of the pair, the one that fills in a piece of Kratos's history the series never stops building on.
"Marking Kratos' second foray into portable gaming, God of War: Ghost of Sparta stands as a spin-off nestled between the events of God of War and God of War II. Despite ascending to the title of the god of war, Kratos remains haunted by nightmarish visions. One such vision compels him to embark on a new journey when he witnesses his mother, Callisto, imprisoned in Atlantis under the dominion of the sea god Poseidon. Against Athena's counsel to ignore the vision, Kratos sets forth to unravel his past and, in the process, rescue his long-lost brother, Deimos, from the clutches of the god of death, Thanatos. This second instalment for the PlayStation Portable (PSP) maintains a gameplay style akin to its predecessor, introducing a handful of new mechanics. Kratos wields his trusty Blades of Athena in this quest, now augmented with a new magic known as Thera's Bane, amplifying the potency of his attacks. The game also introduces several new magical items and a fresh secondary weapon. In addition to the captivating story mode, Ghost of Sparta offers the "Temple of Zeus," a location where players can spend orbs acquired in the Battle Arena to acquire various art and other bonuses."
