Item Description

Before the first level of God of War is even over, Kratos has fought his way across a burning fleet on the Aegean Sea and torn a hydra apart from the inside. It is one of gaming's great opening statements, and this collection puts it, and everything that follows, on the Vita: both of Santa Monica Studio's PlayStation 2 originals, God of War and God of War II, on one cartridge.

The first game, directed by David Jaffe, is a story of revenge. Kratos, a Spartan warrior bound to Ares, is commanded by the gods to destroy the god of war, and the only weapon capable of it is Pandora's Box, hidden inside a temple chained to the back of the Titan Cronos. The Blades of Chaos, chained to his arms, set the template for a whole generation of action games, sweeping through crowds in wide arcs, while brutal context-sensitive finishers, puzzles and platforming fill the spaces between fights.

God of War II, directed by Cory Barlog, is bigger in every direction. It opens with the Colossus of Rhodes coming to life and goes on to Kratos riding Pegasus, allying with the Titans and challenging the Sisters of Fate themselves, building to one of the most famous cliffhangers of its generation. The combat is deeper, the bosses are larger and the set pieces more ambitious, and many fans still consider it the high point of the original trilogy.

The Vita version is based on the HD remasters from the PS3 collection and is smart about the handheld's controls. The second analog stick handles dodges, the rear touch pad takes over shoulder-button actions like opening chests or pushing puzzle blocks, and the front screen switches weapons and triggers Kratos's rage. It gives up some of the console version's sharpness and smoothness to fit in your hands, but having both of Kratos's Greek epics in a single portable package is a remarkable thing, and a natural companion to the series' PSP entries.
