Item Description
When God of War: Chains of Olympus launched for the PlayStation Portable, it did something that genuinely surprised people — it delivered a full, console-quality God of War experience in the palm of your hand. Developed by Ready at Dawn rather than Santa Monica Studio, this prequel to the original trilogy was a bold bet that paid off spectacularly. It won over critics and fans alike, proving that the PSP was capable of housing one of gaming's most visceral and cinematic action franchises without compromise.
Set before the events of the first God of War, Chains of Olympus follows Kratos during his decade of servitude to the Olympian gods. The story takes you through the Persian Empire and descends into the Underworld itself, weaving in figures from Greek mythology like Persephone and Helios in ways that feel both epic and surprisingly personal. The narrative here actually carries more emotional weight than you might expect from a handheld title — there's a thread running through it about Kratos and his daughter Calliope that hits harder than the game's marketing ever let on.
Gameplay-wise, Chains of Olympus carries over the combat DNA that made the PS2 originals so satisfying — the Blades of Chaos chained combos, brutal quick-time executions, and that deeply rewarding rhythm of tearing through mythological creatures and gods alike. Ready at Dawn had to make smart design choices to fit everything onto the PSP's single analog nub setup, and they pulled it off without the controls ever feeling like a downgrade. The set pieces are enormous for a handheld game, and the visuals pushed the PSP hardware as hard as anything on the platform.
For collectors, having this one complete in box is genuinely worth seeking out. PSP games in full packaging are increasingly harder to find in good shape — the cases cracked easily and manuals often went missing over the years. The manual includes artwork and lore details that complement the experience nicely, and the original case art featuring Kratos against that blood-red sky is iconic in its own right.
This is a must-own for God of War fans who want the complete story, PSP collectors building out a serious library, and action-adventure enthusiasts who appreciate when a handheld title rises above expectations and earns its place among the best games in a franchise.
