The sun has vanished from the sky, Morpheus has wrapped the world in a darkness that leaves the gods of Olympus asleep, and the only one left standing to set it right is Kratos, still bound to their service. God of War: Chains of Olympus is the 2008 prequel that sends him into that darkness, and it is the game that proved the series' full fury could fit on the PSP.
Developed by Ready at Dawn, it plays like the PS2 games shrunk down without losing their bite. The Blades of Chaos are back for chained combos and brutal grabs, quick-time finishers punctuate the bigger fights, and Gorgon eyes and Phoenix feathers extend health and magic as they do on console. New tools include the Sun Shield and the Gauntlet of Zeus, plus magic such as Efreet and Light of Dawn. To make up for the PSP's missing second stick, dodging moves to both shoulder buttons with the analog nub, and it works far better than anyone expected.
The journey opens with a Persian army laying siege to Attica, complete with a towering Basilisk, and descends through the temple of Helios into the Underworld, where the ferryman Charon guards the river Styx and Persephone has plans of her own involving the Titan Atlas and the pillar that holds up the world. In the fields of Elysium, Kratos is reunited with his daughter Calliope, and the choice he faces there gives this prequel an emotional sting few expected from a handheld spin-off.
It was a technical showpiece for the PSP, with set pieces and boss fights on a scale the system rarely saw, and it set up Ready at Dawn to return with Ghost of Sparta two years later. Played today, it is a compact, punchy chapter that slots in before the first God of War, and the place where Kratos's handheld career began.
Kratos makes his inaugural appearance on a portable gaming platform in the third instalment of the God of War series. Chains of Olympus serves as a prequel, unfolding its narrative a decade before the events in the original God of War. While retaining the familiar gameplay dynamics of its predecessors, subtle modifications enhance the overall experience. Kratos embarks on a journey through various levels, engaging in relentless combat against foes and formidable bosses, deciphering puzzles based on manipulating boxes, and participating in quick-time events. Throughout his odyssey, he amasses red orbs to fortify his weapons and abilities, secures Gorgon eyeballs to augment his health, and acquires Phoenix feathers to amplify his magical prowess. The game's controls underwent refinement to harmonize with the reduced button configuration of the PSP. Dodging, for instance, now necessitates the utilization of both shoulder buttons and the analogue stick. The iconic Blades of Chaos, synonymous with the God of War series, make a return, accompanied by an array of new weapons and magical spells such as the Sun Shield, Efreet spell, and Light of Dawn.
