Item Description
Mountain, Goblin Guide, attack for two. Few openings in Magic put an opponent on the back foot faster, and this hasty little scout has been doing it since it first appeared in Zendikar. One red mana buys a 2/2 with haste, so the damage starts on turn one, before the other player has had a chance to put a single blocker in the way.
The drawback is what makes it interesting. Whenever Goblin Guide attacks, the defending player reveals the top card of their library and, if it is a land, puts it into their hand. Feeding an opponent lands is a real cost, which is why the card shines in decks that intend to end the game before that extra mana matters: Burn, red aggro and low-curve Goblin lists packed with hasty threats and direct damage. Played that way, every early point it deals is one fewer burn spell you need to draw later.
This is the Modern Masters 2017 printing, collector number 96, illustrated by Filip Burburan, in non-foil. The flavor text gives the scout a wonderfully unreliable voice: "I've been all over this world. I even remember some of those places."
