Item Description
A two-mana Goblin that tutors? Goblin Engineer earns its slot the moment it enters: you may search your library for an artifact card and put it into your graveyard. From there, the Engineer itself can help: for one red mana, tap it and sacrifice an artifact to return target artifact card with mana value 3 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield.
Put the two halves together and you have a small engine for artifact decks. Bin a cheap artifact with a strong effect, then trade a Treasure, Clue or spare rock to bring it back. Bin a big artifact instead, and cards like Goblin Welder can swap it onto the battlefield. In Commander, red artifact and graveyard decks get a 1/2 that tutors and recurs, which is a lot of value for two mana.
This is the Modern Horizons printing from 2019, collector number 128, illustrated by Jehan Choo, in non-foil. Modern Horizons was the first set designed to add brand-new cards directly to the Modern format, and Goblin Engineer shows the kind of inventive, synergy-hungry design the set was built on.
