In most skateboarding games, getting flattened by an anvil ends your run. In Go! Go! Hypergrind, it is how you win. The game’s backstory is gloriously strange: in Toon World, the animation economy has collapsed under the weight of CGI, and the cartoon studio Spümcø is holding auditions for a brand-new skateboarding show called Hypergrind. Your job is to impress the director by skating through cel-shaded sets and throwing your character into as much slapstick catastrophe as possible.
Spümcø, the studio behind The Ren & Stimpy Show, contributed the character designs and animation, and that rubbery, grotesque, gleefully off-color style is all over the game. Runs are timed in the familiar arcade-skater style, tricks chain together with a single button, and gravity is so floaty that your skater seems to hang in the air like a cartoon that has not looked down yet. Bonus points come from the kind of punishment cartoon characters were built to survive: being blown up by dynamite, electrocuted until your skeleton flashes, chomped by giant plants or impaled on spikes. Chaining one mishap directly into the next builds combos, so the most painful line is often the highest scoring.
Beyond the Story mode audition, a Versus mode offers five game types for two players or against the computer, which makes it a good couch game for a friend who appreciates weird humor. Developed in Japan by Poponchi with a small Atlus team, it was released only in North America, in November 2003, and never came out in Japan at all.
Reviews were mixed, but nobody called it ordinary, and that is exactly why it has a cult following today. Go! Go! Hypergrind is a GameCube exclusive that captures a specific moment when a niche publisher let a cult animation studio loose on a skating game, and nothing else on the console looks, sounds or plays quite like it.
Go! Go! Hypergrind is a skateboarding video game for the Nintendo GameCube that was developed by Poponchi and published by Atlus Co. Animation studio Spümcø of Ren & Stimpy fame contributed character designs and animations to the game.
