Magic: The Gathering single: Giver of Runes, from Modern Horizons 1 Timeshifts. Our grade: Near Mint. Pictured: this printing of the card. Every card ships triple-sleeved — a soft sleeve, a deck sleeve and a rigid top loader.
Item Description
Giver of Runes is the modern heir to Mother of Runes, the Urza's Legacy Cleric that frustrated opponents for years. For a single white mana, it taps to give another creature you control protection from colorless or from the color of your choice until end of turn, which makes targeted removal fizzle and lets attackers slip past blockers of the chosen color.
The differences from its predecessor are what make it interesting. Giver can't protect itself, but it can grant protection from colorless, so artifact creatures and colorless threats are no longer a way around it. In white weenie and Voltron decks, it keeps your key creature alive through spot removal turn after turn, forcing opponents to deal with the Kor before they can touch anything else.
This is the Modern Horizons 1 Timeshifts printing, collector number 3, illustrated by Seb McKinnon, in foil. These retro-frame versions of Modern Horizons cards were found in Modern Horizons 2 Collector Boosters, and the classic old-border frame suits a card built in Mother of Runes' image. Its flavor text: “She provides marks of protection to those she chooses as family.”
